Des Wright is a Buckinghamshire man born and bred. His long association with Council Roadmen first began when, as a schoolboy playing marbles along the back-street gutters of his home town of Chesham, he met Jim – Council drain emptier and reclaimed marble supplier! Over the ensuing years, Jim and his contemporaries on the Chesham Urban District Council and Bucks County Council workforces were unknowingly acting out the scenes and sketches that were destined to play a major role in the ‘Rustic Ramblings’ stories.

Upon leaving school in 1952, Des began his working life on a mixed farm. However, in 1954, National Service intervened. Upon completion of this enforced duty, a brief spell on a poultry farm followed. He then entered the family business of Corn and Seed Merchants. It was his travels around the Buckinghamshire villages and backwaters in pursuit of his work, that was to bring him into contact with the Council Roadmen and many other interesting characters, who were to become his friends over the years.
It is they – and Jim – who form the backbone of ‘Rustic Ramblings’ and ‘Tap Room Tales’.

Other interests include gardening, classical music, bird-watching, and walking the Yorkshire Dales. Although now past retirement age, he remains in full-time employment driving around the highways and byways meeting interesting people, always listening, hoping to glean a few snippets that will go towards making another story.
